I wish I could think of better name for this type of illustration! I think myself and the news editors and journalists used to call them ‘storyboards’.
They’re sequential art, they’re a bit like comics, and a bit like very very reduced and brief storyboards.
I enjoyed this type of work. Sometimes the editor or journalist would ask me to come in to the newspaper office—in a hurry—and we’d discuss what needed to be shown, together. It was nice and collaborative. I brought my materials with me and took a desk in their office for a few hours while I did the work. It’d be approved and sent off to the print department—and sometimes would appear in the evening edition of the paper that very day!
These days with email, it’s much easier of course to collaborate remotely.
